We Need Nuclear Energy, Prime Minister Radicova Says

PRAGUE/BRATISLAVA, May 19, (WEBNOVINY) — In her speech at the European Nuclear Forum in Prague on Thursday, Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said that nuclear energy should continue playing an unchanged role in the European energy mix. However, development in fields of safety, cost efficiency and competitiveness of nuclear energy production requires new technologies and development of new, safer solutions, she said.

“The events in Japan, as well as other industrial accidents, force us all to above all assess the events that led to them thoroughly, responsibly and into the smallest detail. Our subsequent decisions have to be based on expert analyses, as only then we can make decisions good and responsible towards our citizens and nature,” said Radicova in her speech.

Therefore, according to her the Slovak government supports carrying out stress tests of nuclear power plants which will be focused on causes and consequences of circumstances that caused the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant. “In this context, I would like to emphasize that the works on improving the protection of operations of our nuclear power plants in the case of an earthquake started well before the events in Japan. This shows that we approach the safety of nuclear power plants really responsibly,” Prime Minister Radicova said.
