BRATISLAVA, December 6, (WEBNOVINY) — The neo-liberal Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party will demand holding a referendum in case that the upcoming eurozone summit in Brussels agrees fundamental changes that would reduce Slovakia’s fiscal sovereignty. “We consider the formation of a fiscal union and cancellation of the right of veto to be a major reduction of Slovakia’s sovereignty and independence. The SaS party does not agree with this and if something like this was to happen, then only based on a referendum,” SaS leader Richard Sulik told Tuesday’s news conference.
According to Sulik, the SaS party will propose holding a referendum on issues regarding the future functioning of the European Union and eurozone on the day of parliamentary elections, which is March 10 of next year. Sulik further announced that he will approach chairmen of parliamentary parties and convene for talks to include the vote on the referendum on the agenda of the ongoing parliamentary session.
Sulik believes that holding a referendum on election day would increase turnout and minimize costs. „Of course, organizing a referendum will cost several million euros, but to blindly agree with everything that Brussels proposes will cost several billions,“ he said.
In early October, SaS did not support the enhanced EFSF in the parliament in spite of the threat of the Cabinet’s collapse. As a result, early parliamentary elections will be held in March 2012.
