Draft Labor Code is Almost Final, Prime Minister Announces

BRATISLAVA, September 11, (WEBNOVINY) — The draft amendment to the Labor Code, which has been submitted to the Parliament, it is almost final. Prime Minister Robert Fico announced this at Tuesday’s news conference. „The draft has been submitted. I do not anticipate any changes from our side, but if some improvements are presented, we will not object to improvements,“ he said. The prime minister said he considers the draft amendment a healthy compromise and added he would view it as a big mistake if after all those negotiations about the draft, a discussion would now start anew. As he repeated, if the future shows that some of the consolidation or legislative action adopted in the Labor Code will have a devastating effect on the business environment, they are ready at that moment to seek a solution. He said he expects a colorful discussion about the changed labor legislation in parliament.

The prime minister further outlined the possibility that some of the rights guaranteed by the Labor Code could in the future be „elevated into a constitutional law.“ „Indeed, it is probably desirable that we gradually get into a stage where the Labor Code would be a very stable standard that will not be subject to periodic changes,“ said Fico. As he explained, some of the provisions requiring the flexibility could then be altered by an ordinary law, while basic labor law status of employees would be guaranteed by a higher level legal high standard, a constitutional law. „I think it would not be a problem to compile such a standard European Labor Code if we put together what is typical of European codes. I have no objections to that,“ Prime Minister Fico said.

The session of the Slovak Parliament that will debate in the first reading the revised Labor Code started on Tuesday afternoon.
