BRATISLAVA, November 8, (WEBNOVINY) — Cyprus will open its embassy in Slovakia this Wednesday. Slovakia has its embassy on the island since it became an independent country on January 1, 1993. “We welcome the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus. It is a country where the position of our diplomacy is very significant,” said Lubos Schwarzbacher, the Foreign Ministry spokesman for SITA news agency. The island is an subject of an ongoing dispute between Turkey and Greece. Slovakia is an important actor, as the Cypriot Greeks and Cypriot Turks have been meeting at the Slovak Embassy for years. Slovaks had to visit the Cypriot embassy in Vienna until now.
“It is not us who is making decisions regarding establishment of embassies in Slovakia. This is always a sovereign decision of the state in question,” Schwarzbacher answered the question whether opening of more embassies is Slovakia is planned.
