BRATISLAVA, April 20, (WEBNOVINY) — Director General of the Tax Directorate Miroslav Mikulcik has stepped down from the post on Wednesday. „I do not want to be the means of any power struggle, whether in relation to the opposition or inside the coalition. I do not want to get the finance minister, whom I greatly respect, or the prime minister into any conflict, and therefore I have decided to resign from my post today,” Mikulcik told the media. He further said he had always demonstrably acted in public interest and in line with respective legislation. Mikulcik concluded by saying that he supports the reform process and the direction taken by the incumbent government.
The scandal broke out last week after it came to light that the company Nitra Invest of SDKU-DS district head in Nitra Ondrej Scurka rented a building to the Kosice Regional Tax Office for about EUR 6.6 million. The opposition rushed to accuse the SDKU of party cronyism and SMER-SD head Robert Fico demands the head of Finance Minister Miklos, who nominated Mikulcik into his office.
A disagreement between Radicova and Miklos arose due to differences in their opinions on the accountability of head of the Tax Directorate in the case of renting the building in Kosice. Radicova demanded that Mikulcik resigns, while Miklos has asked him to remain in office. The two Cabinet representatives are sticking to their positions. However, Radicova claims to respect Miklos’ personal competencies in his department.
