Storms Cause Damages to Railways

BRATISLAVA, July 22, (WEBNOVINY) — During three days of this week marked by heavy storms and torrential rain and hail, railway network operator ZSR suffered damages to property preliminarily estimated at 220,000 euros. From July 19 to July 21, the railway firm was forced to stop or reduce service on twenty sections of its network and more than a hundred employees had to be deployed to eliminate damages caused by the bad weather. Heavy storms washed out tracks, fallen trees damaged overhead traction lines, there were repeated power failures, which caused malfunction of railway security equipment, spokeswoman for ZSR Martina Pavlikova informed SITA news agency.

She said that on many occasions lightning struck their technological equipment and traction poles, causing power outages and disturbances. „In spite of extremely adverse weather conditions, ZSR and thanks to dedication of staff of its divisions managed to quickly remove the arisen outages,“ she said. Railway staff had plenty of work especially in northern and central Slovakia, in sections near Cadca, Tisovec, Hnusta, Dolny Kubin, but also on tracks near Poprad or Ziar nad Hronom.
