Slovakia to Cut Energy Spending by 8,500 TJ over 3 Years

BRATISLAVA, May 11, (WEBNOVINY) — Thanks to energy saving measures, Slovakia should reduce energy intensity by 8,500 terajouls (TJ) over three years. According to the draft action plan of energy efficiency, during a nine-year period from 2008 to 2016, without taking into account the impact of companies involved in trading with greenhouse gas allowances, Slovakia should cut energy consumption by 28,000 terajouls. In the period from 2011 to 2013, power saving measures will focus on buildings, the public sector and industry.

At present, approximately 80 percent of buildings in use are older, where the main energy saving measure is improving thermal and technical characteristics, as well as improving energy effectiveness of technical equipment. Within support to new buildings, the action plan counts on supporting construction of low-energy and energy-passive houses. The planned savings in this area represent 1,800 terajouls.

In the public sector, the main task will be renovation of the buildings it uses. Energy consumption should be reduced by 2,300 terajouls. Within industry, energy intensity of output should continue to be cut over the three-year period. Cuts should amount to almost 2,500 terajouls.

The second action plan of energy efficiency counts on energy consumption cuts in electrical devices and transport. Replacement of white goods with newer models should continue, and contribute to energy savings in the volume of 1,000 terajouls. In transport, the aim is to reduce energy requirements in transport of goods and persons by 950 terajouls.

According to the Economy Ministry, which elaborated the second action plan, Slovakia fulfilled the objectives of the first action plan active between 2008 and 2010. Energy savings reached 3,700 terajouls. The ministry commented that Slovakia met the medium-term goal defined for the 2008-2010 period. Investments required for the goal totaled EUR 3.3 billion, which represents 80 percent of the planned finances.
