SE Sealed Contracts for EUR 2.63B to Complete Mochovce NPP

BRATISLAVA, December 12, (WEBNOVINY) — Power utility Slovenske Elektrarne (SE) has already concluded contracts for completion of Mochovce nuclear power plant units 3 and 4 worth 2.63 billion euros. As SE spokesperson Janka Burdova said, the contracts constitute more than 94 percent of the overall investment. “Approximately 78 percent of contracts were signed with Slovak and Czech companies. More than 3,200 people work on the site at present, most of them coming from the region where the power plant is situated,” she added.

SE installed a pressure vessel into the fourth unit of the nuclear installation at the beginning of December. CEO of the company Paolo Ruzzini noted that the installation was completed as scheduled. “The successful fitting of the second pressure vessel, the major component of the power station, confirms that we are on the right track to fulfill our commitments in spite of the difficult economic environment,” Ruzzini elaborated.

The pressure vessel in the third unit was fitted in September of last year. In the vessel, the fission reaction takes place and the container prevents impacts caused by high pressure and temperature generated by the plant’s operation. Czech company Skoda Jaderne Strojirenstvi Plzen is the supplier of pressure vessels for all four units.

The third unit of Mochovce NPP should be put into operation by the end of next year, and the fourth unit eight to ten months later. Construction costs are estimated at 2.8 billion euros. Construction works on completion of the EMO third and fourth units were officially launched on November 3, 2008. The units will have installed capacity of 880 megawatts. The power utility Slovenske Elektrarne signed contracts with the main contractors Skoda Jadrove Strojirenstvi (JS), Atomstroyexport, VUJE, Enseco, Inzinierske Stavby Kosice and Enel Ingegneria & Innovazione in early June 2009.

Until January 1, 2008, EUR 347 million was directed to construction works. The sum reflects the value of equipment and buildings that can be used in the completion of the two units. The premises were about 70 percent finished and technical equipment 30 percent installed. Since 2006, the Italian energy giant Enel SpA controls a 66-percent stake in Slovenske Elektrarne and the government privatization agency, the FNM holds 34 percent. The Italian investor acquired the majority stake in Slovenske Elektrarne in April 2006.
