President Gasparovic to Attend UN General Assembly in NY

BRATISLAVA, September 20, (WEBNOVINY) — Attending the UN General Assembly later this month, Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic will promote locating in Bratislava a regional center of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, UN WOMEN. The Slovak head of state will support this idea at the upcoming working visit to the U.S.A. from September 22 to 27. The president will lead the Slovak delegation to the current UN General Assembly in New York. „The main topic of the general debate of the 67th UN General Assembly will be the settlement of conflicts by peaceful means,“ said Elena Bianchi for the President’s Office’s Press Department.

President Gasparovic will meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York and debate the action program of the Secretary General in his second election term. Gasparovic will point out Slovakia’s active contribution to fulfillment of targets also through personnel capacities of the Slovak diplomacy. In particular, judge Peter Tomka (former Slovakia’s permanent representative to the UN in New York) is the incumbent Chairman of the International Court of Justice, Milos Koterec is the Chairman of the UN Economic and Social Council, Jan Kubis is Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan and Miroslav Jenca is the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia.

In his addresses and in debates, President Ivan Gasparovic will express support to the UN Development Program. At a meeting with President of the UN General Assembly Vuk Jeremic, Gasparovic will support a reform of the organization as well as strengthening of institutional cooperation of the General Assembly with other main bodies, in particular with the Security Council, the International Court of Justice and the Economic and Social Council. At the UN, the president will comment on current international affairs. „He will express concern over the development in Syria, where in spite of intensive efforts of the international community, the long-term internal conflict has net yet been settled,“ Bianchi said. The Slovak president will also point out the urgency of the humanitarian situation of civilians, including a large number of refugees.

The Slovak delegation will return to Slovakia on Friday, September 28.
