BRATISLAVA, February 5, (WEBNOVINY)- Problems which came to light during the failed parliamentary election of the new prosecutor general had also one positive effect, thinks Prime Minister Iveta Radicova, explaining that it was another impetus for accelerating works on the prosecutor office law. The prime minister stated in a regular Saturday debate show on Slovak Radio that the new law will secure that nobody will have such huge Stalin-type competencies allowing to stop criminal prosecution.
The prime minister admitted that the prosecutor general election was undignified and a farce in some moments However, the problem is in the background of the election, which is just tip of the iceberg, she said. Radicova pointed out that according to surveys as many as 65 percent of citizens are not satisfied with how organized crime cases are investigated and how slow criminal prosecution is, with which cases are investigated and which not and also with how cases are halted. She underscored that the European Court for Human Rights many times dealt with unjustified procrastinations in Slovakia caused by law enforcement bodies. Radicova underscored that in several European countries some ex-ministers have been prosecuted for abuse of power. In Slovakia however big fish, white collars are simply untouchable, the Prosecutor General Office stopped several big cases, as we witnessed in the past, said Radicova. She stated that many imperfections still persist and this situation was reflected in the prosecutor general election, which was to give an answer to whether to walk the old path or whether a change should be made on this post.
