Parliament Approves Lower Salaries for all Mayors

BRATISLAVA, April 5, (WEBNOVINY) — Basic salary of mayors of towns and villages in Slovakia will drop ten percent. The municipal council will be able to increase their minimum salary set by the law by a maximum of seventy percent. This stems from an amendment to the law on remuneration of mayors of towns and villages from the workroom of the liberal SaS party. The deputies removed from the legislation the possibility to award monthly bonuses to mayors.

In line with the new legislation, a mayor will be entitled to severance pay worth three monthly salaries, instead of the current five, and only after serving in the post for a minimum of six months.

The approved amendment also affects current mayors. From twenty days of taking effect, municipal councils have to meet in order to approve a salary for the mayor within the caps set by the law. Otherwise, mayors will receive the minimum salary as defined by law.

After the president signs it into law, the new wording of the law is to take effect on May 1 of this year.
