Number of People on Unemployment Benefits Shrank in July

BRATISLAVA, August 18, (WEBNOVINYA) — The number of recipients of unemployment benefits reached almost 41,500 in July, down by 1,800 from June and 600 in yearly terms. The social security provider Socialna Poistovna paid out the benefit to 43,100 individuals monthly over the first six months of this year, according to figures released by Socialna Poistovna.

Payment of the unemployment benefit should be amended as of next year. Pursuant to the revision to the law on social insurance that is part of the tax and levy reform, the volume of unemployment benefits would decrease over the six-month eligibility period. It would be highest for the first two months at 65 percent of the gross wage, 45 percent for the next two months and 35 percent in the last two months. The Cabinet should pass this proposal at its session on Friday.

The unemployment benefit currently amounts to 50 percent of the gross wage of the unemployed person and Socialna Poistovna pays out the benefit for maximum of six months. The unemployed who draw the benefit for the whole six-month period should thus receive less from the state than they do now. Based on the effective legislation, the unemployed persons receive 300 percent of their gross wage from Socialna Poistovna, the benefit should amount to 290 percent of the previous gross wage as of January.
