BRATISLAVA, November 20, (WEBNOVINY) — A congress of Slovakia’s national cultural heritage and research institution Matica Slovenska elected a new leadership of the organization for the upcoming three-year term on November 19-20 in Martin. The new head of the organization Marian Tkac, former deputy governor of the National Bank of Slovakia, plans to attract more young people, nearly double the number of members and render the social status to Matica Slovenska which it deserves. “Our duty, of Matica Slovenska and me personally, is to win young people through appropriate means so that they know about its existence. And my personal ambition is to increase the number of members to 100,000 in the offing and to make the word Matica sound as something sacred. In the near future, I intend to meet with and ask to be received by representatives of all political parties in the parliament, all academic functionaries, county heads, and mayors of larger towns and villages, and I will offer membership in Matica Slovenska to all of them,” he declared.
Along with Tkac, Jozef Markus, who has been at the helm of the organization until now, and director of the information department of Matica Slovenska Lubomir Kralovansky also ran for the top post. 415 of 462 invited delegates came to the congress, and 404 delegates cast their ballot in the secret election. Tkac garnered more than half of the votes (213) already in the first round. Markus was supported by 124 and Kralovansky by 67 delegates.
