Explosion in Duslo Caused by Natural Gas Leak

NITRA/SALA, July 25, (WEBNOVINY) – It took more than three hours for seven firefighter crews to put out the fire at the ammonia production unit in Duslo Sala on Saturday afternoon. The fire followed an explosion of a pressure tank with natural gas used in ammonia synthesis during production startup.

Five workers of the company were injured by the explosion and were taken to nearby hospitals. No one was injured by the subsequent fire and no dangerous substances were leaked into the atmosphere. “I think the men have done a perfect job. The weather helped us, because the wind has been dispersing the smoke from the fire,“ Nitra district fire squad commander Jozef Zelenka told SITA news agency.

Fire experts will continue investigating causes of the explosion on Sunday, along with assessment of damages. It appears that a damaged seal on the pressure tank could have caused the explosion. Evacuation of employees of Duslo Sala was not necessary from other production units that continued working throughout the incident.
