BRATISLAVA, February 8, (WEBNOVINY)- The ruling coalition will not file a proposal to recall Robert Fico (SMER-SD) from the post of deputy speaker of parliament. Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik came up with the suggestion arguing that Fico has caused huge damages to Slovakia by knowingly letting parliament pass two unconstitutional bills.
Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said after the Coalition Council’s session that coalition leaders have agreed to not take the move. She however underscored that the former governing coalition bears responsibility for laws labeled as unconstitutional which have been causing damage to Slovakia. She said that it is the matter of conscience and capabilities of a lawyer [Fico] who submitted such laws and refused then to advocate one of them at the Constitutional Court.
In the era of Robert Fico, parliament passed the law limiting the use of profit generated by private health insurance companies and the law allowing the state highway construction on land it does not own, about which the Constitutional Court recently ruled that they are at odds with the constitution. Sulik entrusted leader of the strongest opposition party SMER-SD and Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Robert Fico to represent the parliament before the Constitutional Court in a trial over the law that limits the options for public health insurers to use the profits they generate. Sulik picked Fico because he serves as Deputy Speaker of Parliament and also because he is a lawyer. Fico however rejected the appointment to defend the parliament.
