Cabinet Updated on Security of Slovakia’s NPPs

BRATISLAVA, March 17, (WEBNOVINY) – Nuclear power plants in Slovakia are able to resist strong earthquakes: the nuclear power utility in Jaslovske Bohunice should be able to survive an earthquake of 8 intensity degree, according to the MSK64, while the nuclear power plant in Mochovce should resist an earthquake of 7.4 intensity degree on this scale. Head of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (UJD) Miriam Ziakova said at the meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday that horizontal movement is also defined there, which Slovakia’s nuclear power facilities are able to buffer so that they do not suffer any damage and are able to complete cooling of the reactor and transfer residual heat from it. She specified that this is the problem with the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant in Japan, as a result of a tsunami following Friday’s earthquake. Ziakova informed the Cabinet of the state of Slovakia’s nuclear power plants in association with the tragic events in Japan. She stressed that it is really necessary to devote the utmost attention to security of these power plants.

Slovak nuclear power plants also have to comply with the requirement to resist the intentional crash of a small plane. “These nuclear power plants meet this requirement,” stated Ziakova. Much attention is also paid to supplying nuclear power plants with electricity. Ziakova informed that they have manifold secured electricity supplies in the event of a blackout. During its operation, a nuclear power plant generates electricity for its own consumption said Ziakova, adding that if a nuclear power plant is not damaged it is capable of self-supplying in the long run.
