Survey Shows One in Two Citizens Prefers Sovereignty over EU

BRATISLAVA, January 26, (WEBNOVINY) — Almost a half of Slovakia’s citizens (47.6 percent) think that the country should prefer sovereignty over preserving its membership in the unifying European Union. According to a survey conducted by MVK agency in early January, 14.9 percent would support preserving Slovakia’s sovereignty at any price even if it would mean departure from the bloc while 32.7 percent would be willing to rather take the risk regarding some questions of our EU membership than to give up sovereignty. MVK surveyed 1,145 respondents between January 5 and January 11.

More than one-third of respondents (37.6 percent) incline to the opinion that the Slovak Republic should focus more on preserving its EU membership. Of those polled 11.2 percent wants to keep membership in the EU at any price even if the Slovak Republic would have to give up its sovereignty while 26.4 percent of those polled would be rather be willing to make concessions regarding sovereignty than to risk membership.

Respondents answered the question on what Slovakia’s attitude towards the European Union should be like. They could choose between the orientation on keeping Slovakia in the unifying Europe or focus on preserving Slovakia’s sovereignty The agency asked about the European orientation as it wanted to learn about attitudes towards the most serious problems on the table of the new government would be, given the signalized shifts in the coalition behavior of the biggest political parties in order to detect the opinion compatibility of the electorate of individual parties.

The biggest Euro-supporters are voters of MOST-HID of whom 56.3 percent would prefer the EU membership. Then follows SDKU-DS with 50.7 percent. Nonetheless, voters of other biggest political parties rather preferred sovereignty over risks of losing EU membership. The SaS has 61.3 percent of them among its supporters, KDH 55 percent and the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities 61.3 percent.
