BRATISLAVA, August 11, (WEBNOVINY) — The Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic revised upward the surplus of Slovakia’s foreign trade for May 2010 to EUR 111.7 million, from the previously published figure of EUR 83.4 million. According to the revised data, Slovakia’s exports in May rose 32.1 percent y/y to EUR 3.982 billion, and total imports went up 34.5 percent to EUR 3.871 billion. The aggregate surplus for the January-May period was EUR 630.1 million.
In the January-May period, Slovakia had the highest surplus in trade with France of EUR 743.4 million, Austria of EUR 736 million and the Czech Republic of EUR 720.2 million. The positive trade balance with Germany represented EUR 713.5 million, with Poland EUR 617.2 million, with Italy EUR 537 million, with Hungary EUR 426.2 million, and with Spain EUR 360.9 million. The surplus with the Netherlands was EUR 351 million and with the U.K. EUR 317.1 million. The highest negative balance was in trade with South Korea (EUR 1.282 billion), the Russian Federation (EUR 1.093 billion), China (EUR 544 million), Taiwan (EUR 292.6 million, and Japan (EUR 237.6 million). The surplus in trade with Malaysia represented EUR 85 million, with Ukraine EUR 57.8 million. Overall exports in the five months of 2010 amounted to EUR 18.473 billion, up 20.8 percent y/y.
In the January-May period, imports totaled EUR 17.843 billion, up 18.3 percent y/y. Imports of components and accessories of motor vehicles swelled by EUR 416.1 million. Imports from Germany grew 15 percent, from the Czech Republic 2.5 percent, from the Russian Federation 33.7 percent, from South Korea 26.4 percent, from China 6.8 percent, from Poland 19.6 percent, and from Austria 4.3 percent. Imports from the U.K. shrank by 15 percent, exports from Hungary dropped 6.3 percent, from France 11.1 percent and from Italy 11 percent. The volume of imported goods from the EU grew 17.3 percent, making up 66.7 percent of overall imports. Import from OECD countries went up five percent to represent 62.2 percent of overall imports.
