Slovakia’s Trade Surplus in February was EUR 347.7M

BRATISLAVA, April 5, (WEBNOVINY) — Foreign trade continues the trend of previous years of showing a surplus that even edged higher from the previous year. According to the Statistics Office preliminary data, exports exceeded imports in February by EUR 347.7 million while it was EUR 177.5 million in the same month of last year. After a surplus in January was revised by almost EUR 35 million upwards to close to EUR 264 million Slovakia’s foreign trade reported cumulative surplus of EUR 611.6 million for the first two months of this year.

Overall exports of goods and services from Slovakia in the second month of this year reached EUR 4.748 billion. This is 8.7 percent more than in February of last year. On the other hand, imports to Slovakia in January grew at a slower pace when they surged on an annual basis by 5 percent to be at EUR 4.4 billion. For the first two months of this year total exports surged 8.5 percent to EUR 9.16 billion and total imports went up 6.5 percent to EUR 8.548 billion.

After a period of prevailing trade deficits resulting from the global crisis, Slovakia has returned to a trade balance surplus. Over the past three years, its foreign trade reported a deficit in only four months and the country has been reporting cumulative annual trade surpluses since 2009. Slovakia achieved a record trade surplus last year, when exports exceeded imports by over 2.4 billion euros.
