Slovakia’s Foreign Trade in April Ended in a Surplus

BRATISLAVA, June 8, (WEBNOVINY) — According to preliminary data, Slovakia’s foreign trade continued posting a surplus in April. Data of the Statistics Office show the trade surplus in the fourth month of the year at 454.9 million euros. Compared with the previous month the surplus is 65.7 million euros higher. In an annual comparison, the surplus in April represents an increase by 407.1 million. euros.

For the first four months of this year, Slovakia’s foreign trade surplus reached a cumulative surplus of 1.494 billion euros. Compared to the cumulative surplus from the end of April last year, this is an increase by 842.2 million euros. Total exports of goods in April alone reached 5.011 billion euros on a year-on-year increase by 11.4 percent and imports of goods increased 2.3 percent to 4.556 billion euros. For four months, compared with same period last year, total exports of goods increased by 10 percent to 19.758 billion euros and total imports by 5.5 percent to 18.264 billion euros.

Following a period of trade deficit mainly resulting from the economic crisis, Slovakia returned to a surplus in its trade balance. Over the past three years, foreign trade resulted in a monthly deficit only four times and has reported a cumulative annual surplus since 2009. Slovakia had a record trade surplus last year, when exports exceeded imports by over 2.4 billion euros.
