BRATISLAVA, February 14, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovakia will remain without electricity transmission lines to Austria. The plan of the national electricity transmission network operator, Slovenska Elektrizacna Prenosova Sustava, a.s. (SEPS) for years 2012 – 2021 does not count on construction of transmission lines between the two countries. The company had considered in the past construction of transmission lines between Stupava and Vienna and between Podunajske Biskupice and Vienna. “The Austrian electricity transmission network operator labeled both projects as non-implementable because of their impacts on the environment. Since several repeated efforts to open talks on construction of transmission lines failed, we no longer consider construction of new transmission lines between Slovakia and Austria in the development program,“ reasoned its stance SEPS.
The national electricity transmission network operator however counts on construction of new lines between Slovakia and Hungary in its investment plan. The construction of transmission lines from Gabcikovo to Hungary should be launched in 2014. However, this project is not certain either. “The Hungarian partner has not set the place of connection of the transmission line with the Hungarian transmission network yet,“ added the Slovak transmission network operator. If this project takes off SEPS plans its completion for 2016. Slovakia should have two transmission lines with Hungary, namely from Rimavska Sobota and Velke Kapusany by 2012, according to SEPS’s plans. “Considering several uncertainties, these investment plans are still just non-binding parts of the investment plan,“ specified the company.
Slovakia should also boost electricity transmission lines with Poland in the long run. Construction of a transmission line from Vavrin to Byczyna in Poland should start in 2020, according to plans of the Slovak electricity transmission operator. “The project is under scrutiny of both countries at the moment,“ said SEPS.
The strongest electric transmission lines are currently between Slovakia and the Czech Republic and SEPC does not count on strengthening the profile between the two countries in its plan for 2012 – 2021. Slovakia is connected with Ukraine by the existing line from Velke Kapusany to Muchacevo, which should be replaced by a transmission line to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border.
Slovenska Elektrizacna Prenosova Sustava is currently implementing 24 investment projects reconstructing power stations and transmission lines or introducing remote management of electric stations. The company plans another 50 projects in a mid and long-term horizon. SEPS has not released the volume of required investments yet.
Slovenska Elektrizacna Prenosova Sustava emerged from division of the power producer Slovenske Elektrarne as of January 21, 2002 in three independent joint stock companies. The company operates the national electricity transmission network and secures transmission of electric power though its transmission lines with installed capacity across Slovakia, import, export and transmission of power energy and its exact measurement. A package of 100 percent shares of SEPS is in hands of the government privatization agency, the National Property Fund (FNM) but the Ministry of Economy executes shareholders‘ rights.
