Slovakia to Provide Shelter for Afghan Refugees from Iran

BRATISLAVA, May 23, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovakia will become a new temporary home for forty-six Afghan refugees from Iran who arrived here on Monday. They came based on a December 2010 agreement between the Slovak government, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). A group of women and children landed at the Kosice airport after 2 p.m.

The oldest woman is 55 years old and the youngest member of the group is a seven-month-old baby. They will be accommodated in the Interior Ministry’ asylum facility in Humenne where they can stay for six months at most. After this period, they will be resettled to third countries. The Interior Ministry will provide them accommodation, food, and basic sanitary supplies, all partly financed from the European Fund for Refugees. The UNHCR will secure health and social care while IOM will resettle the refugees to the target destination, including selection of the cultural orientation and the journey itself. Based on the aforementioned agreement, Slovakia will provide capacity for 200 refugees and persons under UNHCR protection this year who need temporary shelter before being resettled to the target country, informed the Slovak Interior Ministry.
