BRATISLAVA, August 18, (WEBNOVINY) – Extension of gas distribution in Slovak villages is currently not being considered. Gas distributor SPP – Distribucia, a.s. is not planning extension of its gas distribution network in the upcoming period. “We are currently only restoring gas lines,” stated head of the SPP – Distribucia’s communication department, Ivana Zeliznakova, for the SITA news agency. Gas is currently distributed to 2,234 of all 2,891 villages. This means that 94 percent of Slovak citizens have access to gas in Slovakia.
„Ninety-four percent of the Slovak population has access to gas and Slovakia thus has the second densest gas distribution network in Europe,” added Zeliznakova. The overall length of the distribution network reaches almost 33,000 kilometers. “The company is currently fully focused on restoration of gas lines, the lifetime of which is about to expire, and improvement of gas distribution to all customers,” stated the company.
Slovak consumers used less natural gas last year than a year ago. According to the Economy Ministry’s data, 5.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas were consumed in Slovakia, a year ago it was 5.9 billion. Nonetheless, the Economy Ministry expects consumption to gradually increase; this year it is estimated to reach 5.9 billion cubic meters. In 2012, natural gas consumption should grow to 6.1 billion cubic meters, while in 2020 it should be around 7.5 billion cubic meters.
The Slovak distribution network transported a total of 71.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas last year. A year ago, it was 66.4 billion cubic meters. The contractual portfolio of the distribution network operator grew further last year. Both the number of the network users and signed contracts increased. The natural gas distributor eustream, a.s. acquired several new clients last year, who use flexible short-term distribution contracts in particular,” the ministry concluded.
SPP-distribucia, a.s. is a distribution unit of the gas utility Slovensky Plynarensky Priemysel (SPP). SPP-distribucia was established through unbundling from SPP in July 2006. The state controls 51 percent through the National Property Fund (FNM) government privatization agency; however, the Economy Ministry executes shareholder rights.
