BRATISLAVA, November 20, (WEBNOVINY) – Official Slovak development aid program SlovakAid contributes most to Serbia, when nearly one-fifth of all resources is directed to this Balkan country. This is information from an evaluation report of the Non-governmental Development Organizations Platform, which clusters thirty-one NGOs in Slovakia specialized in foreign development and humanitarian aid.
With regard to regions, the highest volume of funds last year (more than 2 million euros or 33.3 percent) was directed to countries of the Western Balkans. Next was Sub-Saharan Africa (nearly 1.6 million euros or 26.5 percent) and Eastern Partnership countries (1.1 million euros or 18.5 percent). Compared with 2009, assistance to Serbia declined, namely from 39 percent to 18 percent in 2010. On the other hand, development aid to Kenya, Sudan, Moldova and Georgia increased.
The 2010 report further states that the portion of official aid provided to countries that are among the poorest in the world according to OECD/DAC classification considerably grew from a year ago. While in 2009 nearly a half of development aid was provided to countries with higher middle income, such as Serbia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, last year it was only 22.8 percent. On the contrary, the portion of aid provided to low-income countries, such as Kenya, Vietnam or Ukraine, went up from 22.9 percent in 2009 to more than 42 percent last year.
In 2010, resources from the SlovakAid program helped Serbia, Kenya, Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Vietnam, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Albania. As of this year, Slovakia concentrates on fewer countries.
