President Returns Draft to Reduce Mayors' Salaries

BRATISLAVA, April 21, (WEBNOVINY) — Basic salary of mayors of towns and villages in Slovakia will not decrease as yet, as the president vetoed and returned to parliament for reworking the passed amendment to the law on remuneration of mayors of towns and villages from the workroom of the liberal SaS party.

Basic salaries of mayors of towns and villages in Slovakia were to drop 10 in line with approved bill, while deputies also removed from the legislation the possibility to award monthly bonuses to mayors. In line with the new legislation, a mayor would be entitled to severance pay worth three monthly salaries, instead of the current five, and only after serving in the post for a minimum of six months. The amendment was to affect current mayors, too. From twenty days of taking effect, municipal councils were to meet in order to approve a salary for the mayor within the caps set by the law. Otherwise, mayors would receive the minimum salary as defined by law.

The parliament is to debate the vetoed bill, to which the Association of Slovak Towns and Villages and the Union of Towns and Cities of Slovakia opposed, at the next parliamentary session starting May 17.
