PM Fico Introduces Government Program Statement

BRATISLAVA, May 2, (WEBNOVINY)- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said when introducing the government program statement in parliament on Wednesday that the global crisis caused that theses on the superior role of markets and about the minimal state have been rejected. His government therefore will not give up the possibility to intervene in the economy. “The government wants a modern, thrifty and reasonably intervening state that will adopt such measures that will not deform the market,“ he underscored.

The key role of the government is recovery of public finances, but this cannot be done to the detriment of those weak and poor, said the prime minister. This is why his government does not support higher value-added tax, which would harm mainly low and medium income people.

Prime Minister Robert Fico is concerned that the failure of one of EU countries might thwart the consolidation efforts of the Slovak Republic. “I am concerned that we will be recovering, recovering and recovering and that we will be accepting difficult decisions (..) and then the situation will get complicated due to an individual EU state that will spoil everything. I am most afraid that efforts we are going to undertake would go in vain,” Fico told journalists.

Fico added that he would face the most troublesome period in his political career as he will have to adopt decisions that will lead to savings of 1.2-1.5 billion euros. „We have to agree with social partners on solutions that are of unprecedented extent for the Slovak Republic” he said.
