BRATISLAVA, January 27, (WEBNOVINY) — The Slovak NGO People in Peril is evaluating a year of its humanitarian aid to Haiti. They first sent aid to the island, later they deployed a humanitarian mission on site. The NGO launched a public fundraiser on January 13, 2010; more than 256,000 euro was gathered. The public and companies contributed with 105,000 euro, 151,000 came from SMS donations. The NGO visited the coordination center of the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Haitian town of Leogane and coordinated their activities with other international and domestic non-governmental organizations in order to prevent ineffective spending. Complexity of the humanitarian projects in Haiti demands cooperation with other organizations. Success of the project was represented by a presentation that the NGO recently conducted in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana for local organizations which are preparing a program of post-humanitarian aid for Haiti.
In the first phase of the project, immediately after the earthquake, People in Peril sent 25,000 euro to the Irish NGO Concern Worldwide, which provided food and water for minors in emergency camps and in the capital Port-au-Prince. During the second phase, People in Peril sent their people to Haiti to provide a humanitarian program in the areas struck by the earthquake. Among other objectives, the main focus of aid was improving hygiene in rural areas. Construction of 60 ecological latrines and showers for the poorest in two communities is being completed; a series of trainings on hygiene and environment protection took place in Leogane. They also cooperate with the US NGO All Hands Volunteers on constructing two schools in the town.
A massive 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean island of Haiti in January 2010. The earthquake left more than 230,000 people dead, 1.5 million lost their homes and 3 out of the 10 million citizens still suffer the consequences of the catastrophe. According to the People in Peril PR manager Peter Bestvina, Andrej Ban and Marcela Ondekova of People in Peril visited Haiti in December 2010 to inspect their projects. A third phase of providing humanitarian aid is being prepared.
