Overhaul of EMO First Unit Starts on Saturday

BRATISLAVA, April 23, (WEBNOVINY) — Power utility Slovenske Elektrarne a.s. (SE) started the general overhaul of the first unit of the nuclear power plant Mochovce (EMO) on Saturday. This brief overhaul will be first in this year’s general overhaul schedule. “Overhauls and repairs are a standard part of the life span of each power plant and are realized as a process planned in the long run,” said SE spokeswoman Janka Burdova.

It is already the twelfth general overhaul of the first EMO unit with partial exchange of fuel. The preparation for the overhaul started a year ago. Its completion will depend on the planned works on maintenance of standard components and security control systems.

The first and second unit of EMO have installed capacity of 470 megawatts. The first unit supplies electricity to the grid since the summer of 1998, and the second unit since end of 1999. Each unit in Mochovce annually produces about 3000 gigawatt hours of electricity, which covers nearly ten percent of electricity consumption in Slovakia.

Slovenske Elektrarne is the largest power producer of electric energy in Slovakia and the second biggest power producer in the CEE region. Italian Enel S.p.A. controls a 66-percent stake in SE following the completion of its privatization in April 2006, while the National Property Fund owns the remaining 34 percent.
