BRATISLAVA, March 22, (WEBNOVINY) – Coalition MPs again approved the revision to the law on judges and lay-judges vetoed by President Ivan Gasparovic and definitely canceled the Institute of Judicial Candidates, who will become higher judicial officials. There will be no guarantee that they will become judges one day. Higher judicial officials will apply for the post of judge along with other candidates in contests. The opposition has sharply criticized this change.

Justice Minister in the SMER-SD’s Shadow Cabinet, Robert Madej, believes that the revision deprives judicial candidates of their legally acquired rights and is therefore retroactive. The new law intervenes in the independence of the judiciary and will lead to its politicization. Madej has announced a plan to file a motion with the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic.
