BRATISLAVA, July 11, (WEBNOVINY) – The growth of sales in the Slovak industry picked up pace after several months of deceleration. The Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic informed that the growth rate accelerated after four months from April’s 10.7 percent to 15.5 percent in May. In financial terms, industrial sales reached EUR 6.505 billion in the fifth month of this year. In a month-on-month comparison, industrial sales increased by 2.7 percent in May.
The Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic ascribes the y/y increase to higher sales in the production of transport means (+41.1 percent), production of coke, refined crude oil products (+47.6 percent), production of rubber, and production of plastic and other non-metallic products (+23 percent), production of machinery and equipment not classified elsewhere (+ 32.1 percent), and distribution of electricity, gas, steam and cold air supplies (+9.3 percent). Sales in production of computer, electronic and optical devices dropped the most (- 21.9 percent) in the monitored period. The y/y growth rate of sales in the construction sector represented 2.7 percent in May, while sales amounted to EUR 793.7 million compared with May 2010. In m/m terms, the construction sector sales were 4.6 percent higher. The growth rate of sales in the transport and storage sector has been constantly increasing as of the beginning of the year and sales in the fifth month climbed to EUR 544.1 million on a 14.1-percent y/y increase. In monthly terms, they dwindled 0.1 percent.
In May, the ICT sector posted an increase following a drop in the previous month, when sales reached EUR 398.8 million on an 8.5-percent growth. In monthly terms, the sales were 1.7 percent higher than in April. Sales in selected market services surged 11.6 percent to EUR 781.7 million y/y, while the month-on-month growth only amounted to 0.5 percent.
Industrial sales totaled EUR 31.55 billion in the January-May period of this year on a year-on-year growth of 15.1 percent. Sales mostly increased in the production of transport means, namely by 38.1 percent. Sales of construction businesses rose 0.9 percent to EUR 2.854 billion. Sales were 12.5 percent higher in transport and storage at EUR 2.59 billion. Sales in the ICT sector totaled EUR 1.888 billion, up 4.1 percent y/y. Sales in selected market services reached EUR 3.758 billion, up thirteen percent y/y in the five-month period.
In 2010, industrial sales in Slovakia grew 19.2 percent to EUR 67.5 billion.
