BRATISLAVA, November 14, (WEBNOVINY) – There is no political party in Slovakia able to achieve an election result good enough to form a government by itself, opines leader of the strongest opposition party SMER-SD Robert Fico. “It will always be a coalition; I would understandably be very happy if the number of parties was reducing and if after the next parliamentary elections a government could be formed by two political entities,” stated Fico on air of the public-service Slovak Television (STV) on Sunday noon. According to him, his previous government, formed of three parties, was more stable than the current government of four coalition partners. In his words, the incumbent
The former prime minister went on to say that at present, there is the right block and the center-left block on the political scene. The government supports privatization, while his party is against it; the coalition wants to increase the VAT rate, SMER-SD disagrees with it. „Parties that share the same opinion about some steps will always be closer to each other than to a party, which has an opposite opinion,” said Fico and added that SMER-SD will be in the government when it has bigger support than the rightist parties.
With regard to its former coalition parties, which in the last parliamentary elections received smaller support than in the past, Fico said that “SMER can not look at how other political parties are doing; we are an independent political party”. Fico does not reject a possibility that a large center-right coalition of SMER-SD and SDKU-DS will be formed in the future. He believes that the number of political parties that will make it to parliament will be gradually decreasing. Therefore, a possibility of a coalition of a center-left and center-right party can not be ruled out. At present, Fico’s party is willing to give a hand to the ruling coalition in the fight against crisis and in the area of national and state interests.
