Fair-Play Alliance's Web Wins Open Data Challenge Contest

BRATISLAVA, June 17, (WEBNOVINY) — The investigative webpage ZNasichDani (FromOurTaxes) run by the Slovak political fairness watchdog Fair-Play Alliance has won one of the categories of the biggest European data competition Open Data Challenge. The prestigious Open Knowledge Foundation focused on promoting open dissemination of information awards the prize. The competition is held under the auspices of the European Commission

The first place in the category of applications will earn support to the project from the international open-data community. Part of the prize is also a financial reward. The alliance’s manager of technological projects Eva Vozarova said that the award not only represents a satisfaction but it also will help the alliance to develop the application. The gained funds will be put in its further development, namely in its expansion by further types of information that need to be monitored. “It is very encouraging when people who stood at the cradle of visionary projects changing the way of the mankind’s communication consider our idea a move in the right direction,“ said Peter Kunder of the alliance.

A group of experts on open-data projects has selected the Open Data Challenge winners. Members of the jury included the creator of World Wide Web technology Sir Timothy Berners Lee, Google representatives, editors from the Guardian daily, people from news server Zeit Online or co-author of Wikinomics Anthony Williams. Organizers recorded 430 projects from 24 European countries which were free to register during April and May.

The winning webpage from Slovakia features information on who stands behind firms winning public procurement contracts. After entering the name of a businessman, company executive or manager, the webpage automatically connects this name with the related companies and the value of contracts these won in public procurement contracts. The Fair-Play Alliance and authors of the Visual Commercial Register have created the service working with data of the Commercial Register and the Public Procurement Bulletin at the turn of 2010 and 2011.
