BRATISLAVA, March 21, (WEBNOVINY) — The NGO European Network Against Racism (ENAR) will file a complaint with the European Commission against Slovakia for violation and failure to implement in practice the EU’s Racial Equality Directive and equality of chances and opportunities as well as the Slovak anti-discrimination law.
Displays of racism and discrimination have had an upward tendency in Slovakia since 2005,“ said ENAR Slovensko Director Miroslav Lacko at a news conference on Monday. He informed that together 39 racially motivated crimes, 17 physical attacks and five unauthorized police actions were registered in Slovakia in 2009, which the organization stated in a so-called grey report for the ENAR’s European headquarters. Figures for 2010 have not been available yet. Lacko stated that ENAR is collecting data from fifteen NGOs operating in Slovakia dealing with racism and discrimination issues in various forms.
Lacko also informed on the planned draft EU frame for national strategies of Roma integration which the European Commission will release in April. He said that this represents a step forward in European approach toward elimination of discrimination and social-economic exclusion of Roma in Europe.
