EC Asks Slovakia to Clarify AAU Emissions Allowance Tax

BRATISLAVA, July 19, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovakia will have to clarify its AAU emissions allowance tax to the European Commission due to a perceived violation of the EU European Trading Scheme (ETS) Directive. The Cabinet Office of the Slovak Republic has asked the Finance Ministry to provide underlying dossiers for Slovakia’s position over this issue.

However, the precise nature of the objections of the European Commission to the Slovak tax remains obscure. “The European Commission has addressed the Slovak Republic and asked for more detailed information about the newly introduced emission allowance tax,” Finance Ministry spokesperson Martin Jaros reported, adding that the department could not say more to the matter for the time being. In compliance with EU regulations, documents of the European Commission related to the probed cases must not be disclosed so as to protect the purpose of the investigation as long as the proceedings are underway. Jaros promised to hand out detailed information as soon as the proceedings closed.

Nonetheless, the ministry takes the proceedings seriously and has engaged the private law office Siska & Partners. “With regard to the seriousness of this matter and the potential consequences of the proceedings opened by the EC, the ministry decided to use services of external lawyers that cooperate with its internal lawyers, according to Jaros.
