BRATISLAVA, October 22, (WEBNOVINY) — The eighth day of the seventh session of the Slovak Parliament continues on Friday with a debate on an amendment to the Higher Education Act tabled by a group of deputies from the ruling coalition. The debate, which already began on Wednesday and continued Thursday evening after nearly a day-long debate on a resolution on the construction of highways and dual carriageways, will be closed today. The opposition alleges that the amendment that was made hastily and only serves as a presentation of its authors in the media. Among others, the amendment introduces the duty to publish on a specially created website the full texts of graduate theses of all graduates of higher education institutions. The goal is to prevent occurrence of plagiarism.
The parliament should also deal with a proposal for dismissal of three members of the Slovak Radio Council. They are Alexander Koren, Eva Jassova, and Stanislav Haber and they were unsuccessful candidates in parliamentary elections in June for the HZDS and the SNS. The initiative for their dismissal comes from the political fairness watchdog the Fair-Play Alliance and was tabled by junior ruling coalition member the SaS. However, parliament is unable to unify its legal position on this matter. They cannot agree whether the position of the trio should be assessed according to the Law on Slovak Radio, or the constitutional law on conflict of interest. Neither the Parliamentary Media Committee nor the Committee for Conflicts of Interest adopted a resolution on the matter and it is unclear whether parliament should deal with the dismissals.
