BRATISLAVA, August 16, (WEBNOVINY) — At its session on Wednesday, the Cabinet will devote attention to flash floods that devastated some regions of Slovakia at the weekend. “I am going to submit a material to the Cabinet on Wednesday, in which we would earmark EUR 11 million for rescue and recovery works for self-governments, and at the same time, the government is working on new, non-standard solutions to help speed up financing these works,” Finance Minister Ivan Miklos told Monday’s news conference. The Cabinet will debate additional solutions a week later. Miklos remarked that he discussed the floods with Prime Minister Iveta Radicova, who is currently on holiday in Croatia.
Following Sunday’s unusually long and heavy thunderstorms, floods hit in particular the region of Upper Nitra at the weekend. The towns of Handlova, Prievidza and Novaky, and surrounding villages in Prievidza district were flooded. Floodwaters claimed one life in Handlova.
