Cabinet Approves Introduction of Electronic ID Cards in 2012

BRATISLAVA, November 2, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovakia will start issuing electronic ID cards with an embedded microchip next year. This stems from an amendment to the law on identification cards, which the Cabinet discussed and approved on Wednesday. The amendment is to take effect on July 1, 2012.

The chip on the new ID card is to contain data currently written into standard ID cards: name, permanent address, date of birth, but also blood type and achieved education. Electronic identification via a reader will require authorization by the holder with the use of a personal security code. Only authorized service providers holding a respective certificate will be able to read the information from the ID.

Regular ID cards without a microchip will be issued until the end of November of next year. IDs with unlimited validity should remain in use after December 1, 2012, too.
