NITRA, April 8, (WEBNOVINY) – The trial in the case of robbery in a VUB Banka branch in Nitra on January 6, 1996 has started all over on Friday, April 8. Six men stand accused of stealing SKK 173 million (EUR 5.74 million) from the bank. The prosecution delivered the charges against the suspects to the court already in 2000. The trial itself started only on June 15, 2009, more than 13 years after the robbery. Court hearings have repeatedly been postponed due to absence of defendants or their lawyers. Only three court hearings have taken place so far in this case.
The court trial in the case of the largest was scheduled to continue on June 29, 2010, but as the presiding judge in the case died, the case was assigned to a new judge and now starts from the beginning.
The biggest bank theft in the history of Slovakia was committed in the night on Saturday, January 6, 1996. SKK 173 million disappeared from the vaults of the bank in Nitra. The money was never found. The six accused men are Igor S., Bohus S., Gustav I., Julius B., Pavel K. and Viliam M. In addition to this, Igor S. is accused of fraud and Gustav I. of embezzlement. None of them are now in custody; two of them work abroad. Bohus S. and Igor S. were in pretrial custody for a year from July 31, 1999 to January 28, 2000 Gustav I., Pavel K. and Julius B. were also behind bars. Viliam M. has not been in custody so far.
