BRATISLAVA, September 5, (WEBNOVINY) – The President of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic Stefan Harabin has summoned a plenary session over current legislative drafts related to the judiciary for Monday. He also invited Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska, Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka, Ombudsman Pavol Kandrac and chairs of regional courts and the Specialized Criminal Court to attend the session.
The judges will debate the position of the plenary meeting of the Supreme Court to the proposed changes to the Constitution of the Slovak Republic aimed to curb the immunity of judges as well as the draft revision to the Act on the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic.
“Such a far-reaching amending of the Constitution requires an extensive expert debate. The authors should also hear the contrary expert opinion because this will literary eliminate the independence of the judiciary, whereby it was them who anchored these guarantees in the Constitution,” Harabin commented.
The plenary session will also discuss conclusions arising from the program statement of the Slovak government for 2010-2014 for the judiciary. Michal Jurci of the press and information department at the Supreme Court specified that the matters to be debated will cover the budget of the Supreme Court and financing of the judiciary.
