BRATISLAVA, May 31, (WEBNOVINY) — Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik is to announce a public vote of the prosecutor general this week, in spite of a motion submitted to the Constitutional Court by acting Prosecutor General Ladislav Tichy concerning the constitutionality of the new wording of Parliamentary Standing Order. “I do not consider the reasons stated in Mr. Tichy’s motion serious enough to not hold the election for now,” Sulik said in Parliament on Tuesday.
Tichy objects to the public vote as according to him, it prevents deputies to act freely in the election. Sulik responded that in order for deputies to carry out their mandates independently, they have deputy immunity guaranteed by the Constitution. He added that voters have to right to know how deputies in the parliament vote.
The speaker of parliament further commented that the secret ballot for the post of the prosecutor general in line with the old rules was properly carried out. “It is not an ongoing process, simply a new election with new candidates will be held with new conditions and rules, which, of course, will be known in advance”, he underscored.
Sulik went on to say that he will respect the decision of the Constitutional Court, but does not find it necessary to wait with the election for the ruling. “We have been waiting long enough to finally have a person there who will carry out the duty with determination and honestly and there won’t be any sweeping under the carpet, as we have experienced in the past weeks,” Sulik explained his position.
The ruling coalition decided to change the secret vote of the prosecutor general into a public ballot after several ruling coalitions supported the opposition’s candidate in a secret ballot in spite of an agreement to support the coalition’s candidate.
