Slovenske Elektrarne Seeking Foothold on Czech Market

BRATISLAVA, July 15, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak power utility Slovenske Elektrarne, a.s. (SE) controlled by the Italian energy giant Enel is getting a foothold also on the Czech market. Head of SE’s affiliation in Prague Sarka Vinklerova stated that Slovakia’s dominant power producer supplies approximately 2.2 terawatt hours of electric energy to customers in the Czech Republic with annually. “We focus on all potential customers,“ stated Vinklerova in the company monthly journal Slovenska Energetika.

Slovenske Elektrarne launched activities towards customers in the Czech Republic in 2007. “People in the Czech Republic know little about Slovenske Elektrarne and we are trying to change that. Major changes took place in 2009 when our customer portfolio expanded,” said Vinklerova. She opines that there is such a strong competition in this sector in the Czech Republic that it is not worth it establishing a dealer network, call centers or commercial offices, or invest in promotion campaigns there.

Slovenske Elektrarne is currently preparing ground on the market in the Czech Republic. “SE’s strategy bets on gradual acquisition of clientele so that the power producer can use potential of the Mochovce nuclear power plant after it is put into operation for Czech customers. The Slovak power producer seeks to use electricity on the Czech market from its production portfolio and establish a stable position in the Czech Republic,” stated the company.

Slovenske Elektrarne is the largest electricity producer in Slovakia and the No. 2 power producer in the CEE region. Following the privatization in April 2006, Italian Enel S.p.A. holds 66 percent in the company. The Slovak Republic owns the remaining 34-percent stake through the government’s privatization agency, the National Property Fund. Its stockholders’ rights are executed by the Economy Ministry. SE operates installed capacity of 5,737 MW. It runs two nuclear plants, two thermal power plants and thirty-four hydropower plants.
