Slovakia's Unemployment Rate in January Grew to 12.98 Pct.

BRATISLAVA, February 21, (WEBNOVINY) — Unemployment rate in Slovakia rose 0.52 percentage points m/m to 12.98 percent at the end of January, reported the Central Office for Labor, Social Affairs and Family on Monday. In year-on-year terms, the rate of registered unemployment went up 0.09 percentage points last month. Labor offices registered altogether 346,196 unemployed people who were able to immediately start working. Compared with the end of December, this was an increase by 11,293 people and a year-on-year decline by 183.

The overall number of job applicants recorded by labor offices was 391,637 in late January. This is a month-on-month growth of 10,428 people and a year-on-year increase of 138. At the end of the first month the rate of unemployment calculated from the overall number of registered job applicants was 14.68 percent. It thus swelled by 0.49 points from the previous month, while in year-on-year terms it rose 0.11 percentage points. The average number of jobseekers for the last twelve months reached 380,803 persons, which is by 12 more than in December and by 30,391 more from a year ago.

The influx of newly jobless people represented 35,589 last month, which was a monthly increase by 9,943 persons and a yearly decline by 127 people. The outflow of unemployed people reached 25,161 last month, up 6,443 people m/m and up 1,391 y/y. The average registration period was 13.89 months, down 0.03 months from December and up 1.69 months from January 2010.

The joblessness rate increased in all Slovak counties. Kosice posted the highest increase of 0.76 points to 17.54 percent in January. Zilina County followed with a 0.68 points increase to 11.54 percent and next was Nitra country with a growth of 0.64 points to 12.40 percent.

The unemployment rate in Banska Bystrica county rose 0.57 points to 19.43 percent. In Presov, it was an increase of 0.43 points to 18.18 percent and 0.36 points in Trnava county to 8.53 percent. The smallest rise in unemployment rate was in Trencin and Bratislava counties, representing 0.25 points to 9.76 percent and 0.23 percent to 4.86 percent, respectively.
