BRATISLAVA, March 9, (WEBNOVINY) — Foreign trade continues the trend of previous years and again showed a surplus at the beginning of this year. As the Statistics Office reports, according to preliminary data, exports exceeded imports in January by 229.3 million euros, which is 10.3 million euros less than in January last year. Revised data for December showed a surplus of 71 million euros. The January surplus is the thirteenth successive surplus that Slovakia achieved.
Overall exports of goods and services from Slovakia in the first month of this year reached 4.46 billion euros. This is 9.5 percent more than in January of last year. On the other hand, imports to Slovakia in January amounted to 4.23 billion euros. On an annual basis imports increased 10.4 percent.
After a period of prevailing trade deficits resulting from the global crisis, Slovakia has returned to a trade balance surplus. Over the past three years, its foreign trade reported a deficit in only four months and the country has been reporting cumulative annual trade surpluses since 2009. Slovakia achieved a record trade surplus last year, when exports exceeded imports by over 2.4 billion euros.
