BRATISLAVA, January 31, (WEBNOVINY) — Preliminary data of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) show that gross foreign debt of Slovakia in October grew in monthly terms by almost USD 1.5 billion or 2.2 percent and reached USD 68.139 billion at the end of the month. Gross external debt still remained lower year-on-year at the end of the tenth month as in late October 2009 it stood at USD 69.564 billion.
Of all monitored sectors the government’s foreign debt contributed most significantly to the growth of the debt in October when it went up 15 percent in m/m terms to USD 13.321 billion. Compared with September also the debt of other sectors grew, namely by 9.4 percent to USD 11.627 billion. Foreign liabilities of the banking sector increased 1.4 percent m/m to USD 9.702 billion. In contrast, foreign debt of the central bank dropped 5.8 percent from September to EUR 19.393 billion while the NBS recorded a decrease of the debt by 1.7 percent to EUR 14.096 billion in intercompany loans from direct investments.
