BRATISLAVA, May 4, (WEBNOVINY) — The liberal member of the ruling coalition, the SaS party, will not support any proposal to increase taxes in the future, announced party leader Richard Sulik at Wednesday’s news conference. The party considers the statement as yet another fulfilled promise to voters. The SaS committed not to increase taxes in its election program. Sulik made the announcement in connection with the outlines of the state budget, which the Cabinet was to debate at its Wednesday’s session.
The statement does not mean that the party will not support further consolidation efforts, Sulik continued. He believes that public finances can be consolidated by reduction of state’s spending, better management of the state’s assets and cancellation of tax and payroll levy exemptions. Sulik does not consider approving the VAT hike from 19 percent to 20 percent a violation of their election promise. He explained that the measure is only temporary, until the general government deficit is squeezed below three percent of gross domestic product. Sulik believes it will happen already during this current election term.
