Opposition and Coalition Agree on Early Elections

BRATISLAVA, October 12, (WEBNOVINY) — Opposition SMER-SD leader Robert Fico and chairmen of the coalition parties SDKU-DS, KDH, and MOST-HID agreed at their meeting on Wednesday to hold early parliamentary on March 10, 2012. Fico told reporters that the parties came to an agreement to secure the ratification of the enhanced EFSF and the related bills.

A constitutional draft bill to cut short the current electoral term so that elections can be held in March will be sent to the Parliament on Thursday. After its approval, legislator will debate the EFSF. The opposition party will vote for the same shape of the rescue mechanism that was greenlighted in other sixteen eurozone member states.

The strongest opposition party will leave the matters among the coalition partners to them. “What the quartet will do is its business. They will be responsible for governing until March 10,” he stated. His party wants to become part of the government only after parliamentary elections. “Every new ruling coalition should be based on the outcome of parliamentary elections,” he remarked. SMER-SD is not interested in the post of Parliament Speaker if Richard Sulik is recalled.
