NPP V2 Overhaul to Extend its Service Life

BRATISLAVA, September 27, (WEBNOVINY) — Power utility Slovenske Elektrarne, a.s. (SE) has already invested nearly EUR 400 million into the modernization of two blocks in the V2 Nuclear Power Plant in Jaslovske Bohunice. The dominant power producer SE is preparing the two units of NPP V2 for extension of their life span, which expires in 2014 and 2015. SE spokesman Janka Burdova reported to SITA that within the project, security control systems and components related to security and reliability of operation have been replaced with the most up-to-date equipment.

Slovenske Elektrarne has not yet specified by how many years the life span of V2 units would be extended and the volume of investments that will still be needed. Burdova added that results of the program of long-term operation of the power plant will show the volume of additional investments as well as the length of the units’ operation. The program began in 2009. Its aim is to ensure that V2 will meet all security and operating functions in the next period, while maintaining all requirements regarding nuclear, radiation and technical safety. The program should be completed so that all relevant documentation is elaborated before the projected life span expires in 2013.

Two units of the V2 nuclear power plant Jaslovske Bohunice were connected to the grid in 1984 until 1985. Electricity is generated in two blocks with installed capacity of 440 megawatts. SE operates the facility.

Slovenske Elektrarne is the largest power producer of electric energy in Slovakia and the second biggest power producer in the CEE region. Italian Enel S.p.A. controls a 66-percent stake in SE following the completion of its privatization in April 2006, while the National Property Fund owns the remaining 34 percent. Its shareholder’s rights are executed by the Economy Ministry. The power producer operates facilities with installed capacity of 5,693.24 MW of electric energy. Last year, SE generated almost 21,392 GWh of electricity. Nuclear sources made up 65.6 percent of deliveries, 22.3 percent fell to hydropower plants, and 12.1 percent were generated in thermal power plants.
