Lawmakers Turn down Bills on Procurement and EU Funds

BRATISLAVA, February 2, (WEBNOVINY) – On Thursday, parliamentary deputies did not support more efficient and transparent drawing on EU funds. The draft amendment to the public procurement law did not get backing either. Lawmakers voted against including these two points on the agenda of the ongoing parliamentary session. Both legal norms were to be debated in an expedited procedure, as the European Commission has already opened proceedings against Slovakia for being late with implementation of this European regulation.

The Cabinet’s draft revision to the law on the assistance and support from funds of the European Community that the Cabinet passed this Wednesday was intended to improve effectiveness and transparency of drawing on EU funds in the ongoing programming period 2007 – 2013. The ministers passed the proposal of the transport minister for an expedited legislative procedure for this draft, which was to ward off substantial economic damages that may occur if the EU structural funds are not drawn within the set deadline.

Slovakia was supposed to transpose EU legislation into the law on public procurement by August 21 of last year. The amendment submitted by the Public Procurement Office was to take effect on March 1 of this year.
