BRATISLAVA, May 25, (WEBNOVINY) — Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska said on Wednesday that her ministry is examining the possibility of filling a judicial review in the case of releasing Mafia murder suspect Karol Mello based on court missteps. “We are dealing with the release of Karol M., we’ve requested the case file and the procedures of the court are being examined,” Zitnanska told the reporters this Wednesday. She also said that the Ministry is examining the actions of the Trnava court which acted in one of his cases. “If we find reasons enabling us to use our powers, we will act. This has already happened in the past and it will also happen now,” emphasized the minister. According to her the ministry acts on the basis of facts, that’s why they examine the court files. She also explained that her department cannot act only on the basis of information brought by the media.

Zitnanska also said that the ministry is examining many motions and uses standard procedures for this. The Ministry of Justice also examines the release of three drug traffickers who were detained in 2009 with over seven kilograms of heroin and they were released this Monday, as the court did not act – it did not extend their custody. Peter Sufliarsky, director of the General Prosecutor’s Office for Special Operations informed on the case this Tuesday.

Zitnanska appreciates the fact that failures of the courts are subject to discussions. According to her, no changes in the judicial system will take place magically in a single moment; it all has to be done with gradual actions. Better communication of the courts with the public shall be part of the program on making courts open to public scrutiny. She would also prefer if the courts reasoned all their decisions, which should never do any harm.
