Fico Accuses Sulik of Making Fun of Politics

BRATISLAVA, August 25, (WEBNOVINY) — The opposition party SMER-SD started to initiate steps to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session to recall Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik (SaS), leader of SMER-SD Robert Fico informed journalists at a news conference Wednesday. “On the post of Speaker of Parliament, we cannot respect a person who confused his engagement in politics with irresponsible amusement,” stated Fico. Sulik “is demonstrating” in connection with the referendum “a gross mockery of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic and Slovak citizens,” according to Fico.

The SaS, which initiated the referendum to be held on September 18, did not delegate a representative to the Central Commission for the Referendum and on fifty district referendum commissions, they will only have five representatives, Fico pointed out. According to Sulik’s aide Tatiana Tothova, the SaS party considers it important to have its representatives in precinct referendum commissions, which will be in direct contact with voters. However, Fico underscored that on first sight it could seem that Sulik wants to let his people to earn some money; but Fico seriously considered Sulik’s statement that having people on the precinct referendum commission is important for SaS as those people can influence the polls. “This cannot be justified in any way,” stated Fico. Sulik told Aktualne.sk news portal on Tuesday that “for us, the precinct representatives are important. These can influence the polls, and we have 6,000 of them. This is crucial for us.”
